SUMMARY:Extreme Load Performance Assessment of Complex Structures through Hybrid Simulation
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Javad Hashemi, PhD, Swinburne University of Technology Abstract: This presentation introduces cyber-physical hybrid simulation as a cutting-edge technology for evaluating the extreme load performance of complex structural systems. This novel approach merges the adaptive and cost-effective nature of computer simulation with the authenticity inherent in large-scale experimental testing. The discussion highlights Australia's renowned hybrid testing facility, the Multi-Axis Substructure Testing (MAST) system. The $2 million cutting-edge simulator offers a unique platform for large-scale 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) hybrid testing, enabling the comprehensive evaluation of structures under realistic scenarios of extreme events across diverse engineering fields. Speaker Bio: Dr. Javad Hashemi is an associate professor of structural engineering and the deputy director of the $15 million Smart Structures Laboratory at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. He is a Chartered Member of Engineers Australia and the National Engineering Register (CPEng NER). He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. During his Ph.D. studies, Hashemi worked on a multi-institutional research project funded with $1 million by the U.S. National Science Foundation as part of the former Network for Earthquake Engineers Simulation (NEES) research program. The lead institute for the project was Stanford University. Hashemi's extensive decade-long engagement in hybrid testing positions him as the leading researcher in Australasia, with his outstanding contributions recognized internationally. | Event post: https://cme.uic.edu/events?page_id=4160
