SUMMARY:Uncertainty-Aware Air Traffic Management for Current and Future Airspace Entrants

Li, PhD, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor  Location: ERF 1047 or Zoom  Meeting ID: 834 8633 5552  Passcode: SP1kFx8H    Abstract: I will focus on two projects in this talk?The first project focuses on incorporating distributional uncertainty into strategic air traffic management decision-making. We show how decision-making regarding airport ground delay programs based on machine learning prediction of airport capacities can be robustified, yielding less costly delay policies when predictions are overly-optimistic. I will then discuss a potential congestion management implementation for Urban/Advanced Air Mobility, which follows concepts of operations involving fleet operators, airspace service providers, and a central air traffic control authority. Specifically, we utilize a bi-level optimization-based approach to derive such congestion management policies.    Speaker Bio: Max Li is an assistant professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He also has courtesy appointments in civil and environmental engineering as well as industrial and operations engineering. Li received his PhD in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2021. He received his MSE in systems engineering and BSE in electrical engineering and mathematics, both from the University of Pennsylvania, in 2018.
