ASCE wants students to meet CME’s faculty members

Members of UIC’s student chapter of ASCE recently released video interviews with six civil, materials, and environmental engineering faculty members aimed at providing students and perspective students with the opportunity to get to know the professors better.

“A lot of the ASCE board members agreed that as far as knowing the professors, many don’t know much more about them other than the classes they teach,” said Janet Lozoya, an environmental engineering student and ASCE member. “We believe that creating the videos will help students view professors differently and provide an opportunity for them to reach out for guidance in their professional lives.”

The videos have had an impact as students have been approaching faculty with a new sense of confidence.

“These interviews helped me to reach out to professors for guidance and advice, something I wouldn’t have done before. I have heard from my peers that they enjoy learning more about the CME staff and have even reached out to those who have similar interests to them, which has been rewarding to see in my opinion,” Lozoya said.

The students have interviewed, professors Didem Ozevin, Sybil Derrible, Krishna Reddy, Jane Lin, Lisa Stabryla, and Scott Banjavcic.

Each interview provides the viewer with the faculty member’s background, the area they are researching, why the research is important, and much more.
