CBS Chicago turns to Professor Ozevin to discuss bridge malfunction

When the DuSable Lake Shore Drive bridge over the Chicago River failed to close properly, CBS Chicago turned to Professor Didem Ozevin for answers.

A heat malfunction caused the bridge to become stuck in a slightly raised position, leading to a major traffic jam.

“It’s a thermal expansion problem,” she said. “Bridges expand in summer and contract in the winter. “It’s more like an accumulation of multiple factors in my opinion. Because we have hot days in other times during the summer. It is a question of how long the bridge was exposed to heat.”
