New book addresses new international building codes

Building codes are integral to any structure. They protect public health, safety, and welfare by setting minimum rules for building design and construction, making structures stronger, preventing fires, ensuring proper ventilation, and improving accessibility.
To ensure professionals follow the latest codes, Research Associate Professor Mustafa Mahamid has collaborated with author and structural engineer Alan Williams to release the sixth edition of “Seismic and Wind Forces Structural Design Examples.”
Unlike other books, Mahamid organized the book into six chapters aligned with the code’s primary structural design provisions for seismic design, wind load design, steel structures, concrete structures, wood structures, and masonry structures.
“It offers comprehensive examples on wind and earthquake calculations on buildings according to the new international building codes (IBC),” said Mahamid. “Its importance is for university students studying structural loads, young engineers preparing for license exams, professors, and researchers looking to update their knowledge on the new codes.”
Each chapter presents the applicable code provisions clearly and logically, followed by practical, fully worked design examples that demonstrate the correct interpretation and application of the requirements.
“Every example focuses on a specific code section, providing concise, authoritative guidance grounded in current professional practice,” said Mahamid, who is a structural engineering consultant for multiple engineering firms in the United States and abroad.
