UIC Research Associate Professor Mustafa Mahamid recently released his new version of the book “Steel, Concrete, and Composite Design of Tall and Supertall Buildings.” It is an essential guide to designing tall and super tall buildings―thoroughly revised for the latest standards and advances.

“This is a state-of-the-art book on tall building design, which is a specialized design. Its importance lies in putting all related tall building design requirements and options with examples of actual building designs by top engineering firms all over the world. Engineers will learn from the great collection of new and old case studies,” said Mahamid, who worked on the book for three years.

The book is based on Mahamid’s research experience and offers case studies on buildings designed by top engineering firms around the world. It is a practical reference guide ideal for engineering students, consulting engineers, architects, engineers employed by federal, state, and local governments, and educators looking to update their knowledge on the latest materials, technologies, and construction techniques used in the field.

“The book focuses mainly on structural systems classified by load type and materials, with case studies indicating where such systems have been used. It addresses wind load and earthquake load requirements specifically for tall buildings. The book also includes a chapter on special topics to address specific issues on tall buildings,” he said.

The topics covered include:

  • Case studies of tall & super tall buildings from around the world
  • Wind effects
  • Seismic effects
  • Lateral Systems for Steel Buildings
  • Lateral Systems for Concrete Buildings
  • Lateral Systems for Composite Construction
  • Gravity Systems for Steel Buildings
  • Gravity Systems for Concrete Buildings
  • Composite Gravity Systems
  • Analysis Techniques
  • Performance-Based Design
  • Special Topics

This guide also clearly explains the structural systems, codes, and calculations used to design and construct tall and supertall buildings. It discusses the latest versions of relevant codes and standards, including the 2018 IBC, ASCE 7-16, ACI 318, and AISC 360 & 341 to teach readers how to correctly apply these building codes and standards.
