Students and donors network at scholarship reception

Students and donors came together on Nov. 13 for the 26th annual Civil Engineering Professional Advisory Council (CEPAC) Scholarship Reception and Awards Dinner at UIC.
Through the generosity of donors and industry partners, the Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering awarded 51 recipients with scholarships, which support UIC’s mission to provide access to excellent education and success for students. The event also allowed students to meet and network with the scholarship donors and corporate representatives.
“In these days and times, it’s hard for students to have funding for their education, and that’s why it’s important to fund the scholarship programs for the university. There are a lot of changes going on in the federal government. Therefore, students do not have access to funds that they used to,” said Debra Evans, a CEPAC member who established the L.J. Halbert Merit Scholarship named in honor of her late father.
Student Brandon Lomeli-Galloza expressed his gratitude to the donors after being awarded the UIC David Boyce Scholarship. The student recently got married, has numerous expenses, and works full-time at Brindley Engineering, focusing on structural drafting and design.
“I calculated the hours in my head that I would have to work otherwise to earn this money. The scholarship allows me to focus more on school instead of working a 45-hour or 40-hour week at the job. I can come to school and focus and learn,” Lomeli-Galloza said.
In addition to students, Associate Professor Matt Daly and Clinical Associate Professor Scott Banjavcic were awarded the Chris and Susan Burke Faculty Teaching Award, which recognizes faculty members who have impacted students and committed to their personal and academic success.
