UIC professor breaks down why six Chicago suburbs are switching to Lake Michigan water

Assistant Professor Ahmed A. Abokifa, director of the Smart Water Infrastructure Modeling Research Laboratory at UIC, was interviewed on FOX 32 Chicago discussing a new massive infrastructure project that will deliver water from Chicago to the southwest suburbs.

Six communities that are served by aquifers for water are making a major shift as to tap into Lake Michigan before the underground sources to run dry.

Abokifa explained how water from the aquifers is being removed faster than rainwater can replenish them. He also discussed how the project will require the construction of an extensive infrastructure system that will take approximately five years to complete.
