UIC professor helps explain flooding issues in Cicero

Associate Clinical Professor Joseph Schulenberg contributed to a Univision Chicago  investigative news piece called “Cicero’s 2023 floods, among the worst in years: What caused them? We investigate.”

The town of Cicero, Illinois, has experienced ongoing flooding issues and in 2023 it suffered one of the worst floods in years due to intense storms, which affected more than 10,000 homes.

According to the official report, Cicero recorded its highest rainfall accumulation with 9.1 inches falling in just a few hours.

Schulenberg explained how Cicero is at a lower elevation than neighboring towns.

“Flood complaints in the neighboring town of Berwyn, Illinois, correlated with a geologic ridge. Residents at the low side of the ridge were the primary victims of basement flooding,” he said.
