A team of civil, materials, and environmental engineering students won first place in the surveying competition during the 2026 ASCE Western Great Lakes Student Symposium, co-hosted by the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

The symposium comprises a series of team competitions that encompass the different technical concentrations students explore in civil, materials, and environmental engineering. It also provides students with a fun atmosphere and the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals at other schools.

The UIC surveying team consists of Karina Perez, Yasmeen Ibraheim, Zach Barwock, Matthew Hernandez, Aisha Abutayeh, and Sofia Olivares Garcia. UIC PhD candidate Afshin Allahyari served as the team’s mentor.

For the surveying competition, the students used standard field and office equipment and procedures to solve common problems encountered in industry. Tasks included completing a topographic mapping project with a presentation, a topographic map display at the symposium, and field tasks.

This is the second year in a row they have won this event.
