ASCE Legends event set for March 10

The UIC student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting its monthly ASCE Legends event with Karen Kabbes on Wednesday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom.
Kabbes, a trailblazer for women in engineering, is the president and founder of Kabbes Engineering, Inc. (KEI), a water resource and environmental services engineering firm with offices in Illinois and North Carolina. She is the 2014 president of the American Society of Civil Engineers Environmental and Water Resources Institute, and the recipient of ASCE’s national Margaret S. Petersen Award recognizing her mentoring of water engineers from diverse backgrounds, in addition to being a recipient of the ASCE EWRI’s national Lifetime Achievement Award.
A board-certified water resources engineer, she is a civil engineering graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and earned her master’s in public administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to founding KEI, Kabbes held a number of engineering and leadership roles in government including Lake County Stormwater Management Commission chief engineer, executive director of the Fox Waterway Agency, and head of the Illinois Water Resources floodplain regulatory program. Kabbes chaired ASCE’s committee responsible for finalizing the first Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System and is a past board member of the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and the National Association of State Floodplain Managers.
