The UIC student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting its monthly ASCE Legends event with Vito S. Rotondi on Wednesday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom.

Rotondi began his career landing his first professional job in 1971 as a structural engineer with Sargent & Lundy in Chicago.

His work was predominantly structural design of fossil and nuclear power plants. He was quickly promoted to senior structural engineer supervising design teams. Immediately after the Three Mile Island nuclear incident in 1979, he decided to leave the power industry and seek to diversify his experience developing engineering, procurement, and construction capital projects.

This change advanced his career into project engineering, project management, program management, operations management, and executive management. Project scopes included feasibility, conceptual design, detail engineering, procurement, subcontracting, construction, startup, and customer turnover. Gaining this experience led to his promotion to director of projects and ultimately vice president of projects. He developed a diversified portfolio of industrial projects in the oil and gas, paper, telecommunications, fine chemicals, fiber optics, high purity systems, manufacturing, foods, plastics, refuse-to-energy, aluminum/steel, and power industries. Projects ranged from small to large and complex.

Rotondi developed the project management program for training high performance teams in project execution. He was a key developer of The CB&I Management System that was the basis for integrating nine acquired worldwide companies into one unified global operating entity. His experience includes executing projects in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Middle East. He developed a diversified customer base including USX, Alcoa, Noranda, Nabisco, Reynolds Tobacco, CNOC, Corning, Saudi Aramco, Waste Management, Commonwealth Edison, Northern Indiana Public Service, General Electric, Union Carbide, Shell, Proctor and Gamble, Vinda Paper, Anheuser-Bush, Agrium, Air Products, AMOCO Chemicals and others.

Rotondi earned a B.A. in Architecture/Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He continued his education at Texas A&M in the construction executive program. His quest for knowledge continues and he is currently teaching himself Python and astrophysics.
