ASCE student chapter hosting virtual ‘Legends’ event

November 11, 2020

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Address

Chicago, IL 60612

The UIC student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting its fourth ASCE Legends event with professional civil engineer Bob Schwartz on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be hosted on Zoom. Schwartz will discuss his experience as an engineer and answer questions from the attendees.

Schwartz received his BS degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1969. He was a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets and, upon graduation, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. During his five years in the Air Force, he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command – Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota – and served as a launch control officer on the Minuteman ICBM missile system rising to the rank of captain. He received his MBA from the University of North Dakota in 1974 and resigned from the Air Force later that year.

After his discharge, Schwartz began his career with the construction products division of Armco Steel Corporation in Middletown, Ohio, where he started as a sales trainee. He held many positions with the company, and, in 1986, was part of the employee group that purchased the division from Armco and formed the new company, Contech Construction Products, Inc. For the past 25 years, Schwartz has been the account manager for Contech in the Chicago region.

He has led Contech as they expanded from their core products into many areas of products and services for roadways and site development. He has been a member of ASCE and ISPE for more than 35 years and is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois.

The ASCE Legends events are a national ASCE initiative designed to pair seasoned and retired civil engineers with younger members and students in a collective effort to share expertise, experiences, and wisdom as part of the national ASCE’s Diversity and Inclusion best practices. The first event was held in February 2020 at UIC with a large panel of professional engineers. The monthly series started in August, and the events are being hosted on Zoom.
