Neural Networks are mathematical models of theorized mind and brain activity which attempts to exploit the massively parallel local processing and distributed storage properties believed to exist in brain. A conventional computer uses algorithm based programs that operate serially, are controlled by a central processing unit and store information at addresses locations in the memory. On the other hand, the brain operates with highly distributed transformations that operate in parallel, have distributed control through thousands of interconnected neurons, and appear to store information as distributed correlations among connections. The basic building block of the brain is the neuron and it is a simple non-linear process unit. Neural network is created by interconnecting many of the simple neurons in a known configuration or architecture. The primary elements characterizing a neural network are the distributed representations of information , the local operations and non-linear processing. This lecture would cover the process of development of neural network model and its application to model the wastewater treatment processes of four typical wastewater treatment systems namely i) Domestic Sewage Treatment System, ii) Tannery wastewater treatment system , iii) Textile wastewater treatment system , and iv) pulp and paper wastewater treatment systems. The sensitivity analysis of the parameters of the Neural networks in each case would also be discussed. It was found that Neural Network is a robust and highly accurate models for prediction of performance where the high non-linearity relationships exist among process variables.

Prof S. Mohan joined the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India in July 1987 and continue to get up in the ladder of promotion and became Professor on 20th September 2000 and continuing in service till date.. Prof Mohan obtained his Ph.D. in Water Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore India, which is the top-most university in India on academic and research performance. From 2004 to 2008, Professor Mohan was the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Chennai. He has served as the Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chennai , a Federal Government Institute for training of Teachers of Engineering institutions of five southern states of India, during 2009-2014.
Prof Mohan’s research focuses on finding cost-effective, robust solutions for problems in engineering and science by using computational modelling for optimization, simulation, and statistical analyses. His application areas focus on water resources and environmental issues, but the algorithms are general and have been applied to a range of problems including physical and biological groundwater remediation, surface and groundwater contaminant transport (with multiphase transport), population ecology, reservoir operation, waste water treatment, environmental impact assessment and watershed models. These efforts include development of efficient nonlinear optimization algorithms, especially evolutionary computing algorithms like GA, ANN, ASO, Data mining, BIG Data analysis, utilizing high performance computing (including asynchronous parallelism) and applications to realistic models of complex, nonlinear systems. His algorithms do local and global, continuous and integer optimization, stochastic optimal control, and uncertainty quantification.
