11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
In this presentation, climate change science, observed climate changes, and predicted future climate changes with their associated impacts will be presented first. Next, climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation strategies will be described. Thereafter, resiliency and resilient engineering strategies to adapt to climate change impacts will be explained, while emphasizing that resilient options will be limited and challenging if climate change persists. In the long-run, engineered systems should be sustainable (to achieve both climate change mitigation and adaptation). Sustainability is a much broader holistic goal of addressing broader environmental impacts (including GHG emissions mitigation) along with economic and social impacts, during the project life cycle. Life-cycle triple bottom line quantitative framework and an example will be presented that may be useful for sustainable engineering design. Finally, challenges and opportunities for the resilient and sustainable engineering will be highlighted.
Dr. Krishna Reddy is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Director of Sustainable Engineering Research Laboratory, and also the Director of the Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Civil and Materials Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
