UIC ASCE students win big at Great Lakes Regional Conference; head to nationals

In the 2014 ASCE Regional Student Conference, UIC’s ASCE group placed third in the overall competition— securing their spot in the National Competition. The ASCE student engineering organization competes annually in eight different events during this regional conference—against 17 major universities in the Midwestern Great Lakes Region.

“We are very proud of our group’s accomplishments this year and look forward to continuing our successful traditions in the coming years,” says Matt Boladz, ASCE UIC Chapter Vice President, and participant in the Steel Bridge competition.

The Environmental Team Members: Brian Kubilius, Alejandro Trujillo, Joe Guido and Neal Anderson took home first place in this category, boosting UIC’s overall score in the regional contest.

The annual Student Conferences are hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Top universities with ASCE Student Chapters are invited to attend this conference and compete in a series of competitions—most notably the concrete canoe and the steel bridge. Additional competitions are the environmental competition, geotechnical, most recently surveying, and technical papers.

Eighteen ASCE Student Conferences are held every spring, each hosted by an ASCE Student Organization belonging to the Student Conference. In the Midwest region, the Great Lakes Student Conference is made up of the following universities:
