Didem Ozevin investigates bridge damage with CBS reporter
CBS Chicago reporter Lauren Victory recently tapped Didem Ozevin, professor of civil, materials, and environmental engineering at UIC, to distinguish whether visible damage on a Chicago bridge was of structural concern.
The area under DuSable Lake Shore Drive between Wacker Drive and Randolph Street shows exposed rebar and a crumbling façade on the bridges support beams.
What was Ozevin’s assessment? Watch the clip at CBS Chicago or above.
In February 2019, Ozevin was featured on CBS 2 Chicago as an engineering expert to talk about the Lake Shore Drive bridge crack that led to closures and emergency repairs. Ozevin joined Victory under the bridge to discuss the crack and other issues the bridge may have.
In March 2019, CBS reporter Megan Hickey called Ozevin to provide her perspective about the I-80 Des Plaines River Bridge in Joliet, which CBS reported as having “one of the worst structural ratings in the state.”
Ozevin’s expertise focuses on ways to use sensors and other non-destructive approaches to assess the extent of damage in bridges and other large pieces of infrastructure. Learn more about her work on the Non-Destructive Structures website.
