EXTREME: Eligibility and Application

UIC civil, materials, and environmental engineering is accepting applications to the EXTREME program to begin study in spring or fall 2023.

The application process is described below. In addition to submitting an application online, we recommend that you contact Lesley Sneed, the GAANN project director, to notify her of your application.

GAANN Fellowship candidates must:

  • (i) Be U.S. citizens or nationals, (ii) be permanent residents of the United States, (iii) provide evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service that they are in the United States for other than a temporary purpose with the intention of becoming permanent residents, or (iv) be citizens of any one of the Freely Associated States.
  • Have demonstrated financial need via assessment of the FAFSA form by the Office of Financial Aid and Student Scholarships. If a candidate is selected, the Fellow’s stipend will be determined from this assessment.
  • Meet the requirements for acceptance into the PhD program in civil engineering. Candidates may apply for admission after their MS degree (preferred) or directly after their BS degree. Fellowship candidates should have a GPA of at least 3.5 on a scale of 4.0 and GRE scores in the 75th percentile. Exceptions to these criteria may be considered due to exceptional background, such as related work experience.
  • Be interested in pursuing a career in teaching and/or research.

GAANN Fellowship candidates will be pre-screened to determine eligibility for the program. This includes the following:

1. Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The school code for UIC is 001776. Candidates for spring 2023 admission should use the 2021-2023 FAFSA form. Candidates for fall 2023 should use the 2022-2024 FAFSA form.

2. Complete the online application form. The following components will need to be included in the application:

  • Academic transcripts from your BS program and, if applicable, your MS program (unofficial copies are OK)
  • GRE scores (an unofficial copy is OK)
  • Résumé or CV
  • Statement of purpose (one-page maximum) explaining your research interests and career goals
  • Names and contact information for three references

Pre-screening will take approximately two weeks to complete.

Upon successful pre-screening, GAANN Fellowship candidates will be invited to formally apply to the PhD program in civil engineering at UIC.
